Refurbished Key Holder
We love to go thrift shopping. Yard Sales, Goodwill, Deseret Industries etc. We have found so many cool things we have fixed up and made better over the years. This past Summer we found a yard sale that had this cute organizer. Since we bought a couple of big items they threw this in for free. Can't beat that!
I wanted to give this gem a face lift so I took all of the hardware off and took the black chalkboard out. Then I sanded it so the paint would stick and wiped it down with a dry rag to get the dust off.
I painted the chalkboard with regular black paint and the rest a teal color. Then lightly sanded and wiped it all down again before brushing on Minwax Polycrylic with a foam brush. I just followed the directions on the can. This is to seal it and make it easier to clean.
After 2 coats of Polycrylic I had a nice even shine so I decided not to put on a third coat.
Next I worked on the "chalkboard" piece. With my Cricut I made a vinyl cut out with the saying "Keys Please". These two words remind me of my dad. He would say them when he was asking us to get him the keys. He passed away many years ago, but I love having things around that remind me of him. The font I used was Pretty Queen. I used contact paper to transfer the vinyl.
The labels I printed out on white card stock using the font Cheque. Then I cut them out and taped them to the inside of the label frame. These are to label the keys that we don't use as much that will go in the boxes.
This is my favorite part of any project. The finishing touches! I screwed every hook and label plate back on and secured the "chalkboard" back in place. It is so nice to have a key holder where all keys have a place!
What have you refurbished lately? I would love to know!

This one turned out looking so modern! Remodeled furniture is my favorite! I need to try redoing some of my furniture!
ReplyDeleteThat saying is nostalgic for me too bcz on Sundays driving home from church whoever remembered to shout "keys please" first got to go unlock the front door. Good memories of family life. Someday we're all gonna be back together with everyone we love.
ReplyDeleteThat will be a WONDERFUL day!
